over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night? Someone has to win this meeting between the 1-7 Giants and 2-7 49ers. Here are this week’s predictions from your Big Blue View contributors.Chris Pflum I'll just get this out to the way first: I'm picking the Giants to lose. I don't know how you could watch the Giants through the first half of the season and have anything like faith in the team to not trip over their own feet. That being said Authentic Alec Ogletree Jersey , this is likely Eli Manning's last stand, and I would not be surprised to see "Playoff Eli" make an appearance with his career on the line. Speaking of "lines", the possible addition of Jamon Brown could serve as a legitimate upgrade who helps Eli (and therefore Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard) produce. An upgrade would also be appreciated bySaquon Barkley, who has had the worst blocking in the league. On the defensive side of the ball, I would expect James Bettcher to regularly send the kitchen sink to confuse and disrupt Nick Mullens. All of which brings me back to my original point. I can't have any faith in this team after watching them through their first eight games. Final score: 49ers 24, Giants 21Season record: 4-4Dan PizzutaLast week against the Oakland Raiders, the San Francisco 49ers put up 34 points with their third-string quarterback as the starter. The Giants haven’t scored that many points in a game since Week 15 of the 2015 season. Not a great start.San Francisco had a perfect offensive game plan that got the quarterback comfortable and needed Mullens to throw into exactly zero tight windows. Oakland’s pass defense is only moderately worse than the Giants’. The Giants rank 23rd in big play rate allowed and will be going against an offense that has the 11th-highest big play rate this season. There’s a chance for points on that side of the ball.So the Giants might have to figure out how to keep up and adjust when they’re on offense. San Francisco ranks 18th in defensive DVOA, 17th against the pass. They’re 11th in DVOA against opposing No. 1 receivers and 18th on the right side, where Richard Sherman typically plays. The Niners are 31st in DVOA against the pass on the left side, so you would hope there’s a decent amount of time Odell Beckham is lined up there. San Francisco is also 14th against opposing running backs in the passing game with two linebackers in Fred Warner and Rueben Foster who could be athletic enough to limit Saquon Barkley.San Francisco is also the weakest on deep passes — 27th in defensive DVOA, opposed to 19th on short passes — so the Giants will have to push the ball downfield to gain the advantage. There’s not a lot of evidence the Giants will be able to consistently do that.Final score: 49ers: 28, Giants 17Season record: 7-1Patricia TrainaI like much of what I heard from the Giants this week in terms of being refreshed and renewed after the bye week, but someone once said, “Talk is cheap; play the game.” We’ve been hearing how close the Giants are to a breakthrough since Week 1, but it hasn’t come yet, and I’m not sure right now if it’s going to come.People look at the bye week with hope thinking that there will be changes made to make things better. The truth is there’s only so much a team can change. Yes, you might see a new face in the lineup (cough, cough, offensive line, cough) or maybe a new trend or two developing (please let it involve getting the ball to Saquon Barkley in space).Beyond that, the roster is what it is, and with each injury, each new face that’s put into the lineup, it becomes more of a challenge for the coaches to find ways to do what they originally planned to do despite not having the personnel they thought they would have when they drew up the schemes in the offseason.Sonope, sorry. Still can’t go there until I see action behind the words.Final score: 49ers 24, Giants 17 Season record: 3-5Joe DeLeoneThe determining factor for Monday night will be how well the Giants stop the run. Racking up over 130 yards a game on the ground, the 49ers have been run dependent. Nick Mullens was everyone’s feel good story last Thursday night, but will not be a factor this week. Despite a rough past few outings, the Giants defense will hold San Francisco to under 14 points.Ultimately the Giants just need to get out of their own way to put out a good offensive day. The 49ers have a young andathletic defense, but don’t match up well with the Giants. As always, feeding Saquon Barkley more than 20 touches will be key to a strong outing offensively. The 49ers have fallen off tremendously since losing Jimmy Garoppolo to a season-ending injury. In reality this team was too young to be a major threat, and without Garoppolo they are merely a road block for the Giants. Final score: Giants 17, 49ers 13Season record: 3-5Mark SchofieldLast week against an admittedly poor Oakland Raiders defense, Nick Mullens looked like a very capable NFL quarterback. A big reason for his success begins with head coach Kyle Shanahan, who has done a tremendous job of using personnel packages to put his quarterbacks in position to succeed. The 49ers use 21 offensive personnel more than any other team, and San Francisco quarterbacks have a quarterback rating of 112.7 when using that grouping.Shanahan will find ways to exploit this Giants defense. That’s prediction one.Prediction two? This is the third-to-last start Eli Manning makes this season.Final score:49ers 28 Authentic Nate Solder Jersey , Giants 14Season record: 4-4Kevin HaswellWhile Odell Beckham said this week that it’s not impossible for the Giants to win eight-straight games to finish 9-7, I think otherwise. I see it more likely that the Giants lose the rest of their games. With that in mind, I think that Giants fall this week to the 49ers in a tightly contested Monday Night Football game.Final score: 49ers 24, Giants13Season record: 5-2Ed ValentineThere are reasons to be optimistic about the 1-7 Giants on Monday night. They are healthy coming off the bye week. They still seem to be invested in trying to win games and make something of this so-far lost season. The 2-7 49ers aren’t very good. San Francisco quarterback Nick Mullens is coming off a fairy-tale performance. He’s sure to come back to reality. Isn’t he?I believe there is a real possibility the Giants win on Monday night. Shoot, I believe there is a real possibility they win Monday and then follow that up with a victory at home next Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Odell Beckham Jr.’s win eight in a row and make the playoffs goal? That’s crazy talk, but I do believe the Giants could show enough improvement to win a handful of games the second half of the season.I just can’t bring myself to actually pick them to win until they prove to me that they can. Final score: 49ers 28, Giants 27Season record: 4-4Only 12 percent of fans voting in our ‘Fanpulse’ survey have confidence in the direction of the Giants.Scouting the Signal-Callers: Drew Brees will provide difficult test for Giants’ defense The New York Giants righted the ship somewhat last week, earning their first win of the 2018 season with a 27-22 victory over the Houston Texans.Things get harder this week when Drew Brees and the 2-1 New Orleans Saints come to town.Brees and company improved to 2-1 on the season with an overtime victory on the road against the Atlanta Falcons. On the year Brees is once more one of the league’s top passers, leading the NFL in completion percentage (80.6 percent) and having thrown eight touchdowns on the year without an interception. His game against Atlanta, in which he completed 39-of-49 passes for 396 yards and a touchdown, in addition to his touchdown scramble that set up overtime, was almost clinical in passing execution. It was a performance that saw him named NFC Offensive Player of the Week. The Giants’ defense will have a number of things to worry about when facing Brees, but here are just three areas of concern.PlacementEight years ago ESPN featured Brees on its “Sport Science” program, testing whether the QBs renowned accuracy could match up with Olympic archers. The video is impressive, but Brees was making his throws in ideal conditions, without facing a pass rush or defenders in the secondary.Eight years later Brees is still making throws with pin-point accuracy, now with defenders in the secondary and in the face of blitzes and defensive pressure. HIs prowess at ball placement was on full display Sunday in Atlanta.Let’s look at how Brees and Michael Thomas (13) opened the proceedings:Brees hits Thomas on a deep over route and the Saints are immediately in Falcons’ territory. This is the very first play of the game. The placement and the timing are critical to the success of this play, as Brees’ throw hits Thomas in stride, allowing him to maintain his acceleration and separation from the cornerback in coverage:But because Brees puts this throw on Thomas before the safety can rotate down, he gives his receiver an opportunity to prepare for the hit from the safety. That gives Thomas a chance to pick up additional yardage after the catch. Quarterbacks play a huge role in YAC, and Brees certainly helps here. The Saints have a number of weapons in the passing game, from Thomas and Ted Ginn to Alvin Kamara out of the backfield. But they use the tights ends, Josh Hill and Benjamin Watson, effectively as well. On this second-and-6 play from the second quarter, the Saints use a vertical concept and Brees looks to Watson (82) on a seam route:This is another perfectly-placed throw, over the underneath defender in trail coverage to a spot where only Watson can make the catch. In addition, it comes on a vertical route that Brees releases from the Falcons’ 42-yard line, and drops in on the Atlanta 7-yard line:A 35-yard throw made with both precision and placement. This is extremely difficult to defend.TimingAs we saw on the first throw to Thomas, Brees is very adept at making timing throws, in rhythm with the structure of the offensive play. Whether on a throw downfield like to Thomas, or on shorter routes, Brees puts his receivers in position to succeed after the reception by getting the ball out of his hands with perfect timing. Here are two examples of this ability, and how it translates to success for the Saints’ passing game and their receivers. In the second quarter the Saints faced a first-and-10 and ran a simple curls/spacing concept, with each of the receivers on the play running routes at a depth of 4 yards:As you can see, the inside receivers run curls while outside receivers run out routes. Thomas is at the top of the image, and he runs a quick out route working toward the right sideline. The timing and anticipation on this throw from Brees is perfect Youth Eli Manning Jersey , as the ball is on Thomas as he comes out of his break. That puts him in position to pick up additional yardage after the catch:When you can turn a 3-yard pass into a 17-yard gain, you’re doing something right offensively. This next play, from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game, is another example of Brees using timing and anticipation to put his receivers in a good place after the catch. The Saints face a second-and-7 midway through the final quarter, and have the football on their own 22-yard line. Trailing by seven, New Orleans needs to mount a drive. They run a simple slant/flat combination to the weak side, with Thomas running the slant route and Kamara (41) releasing to the flat:The Saints catch Atlanta in zone coverage here, but what really makes this throw is the timing of it. Brees does not wait for Thomas to clear the underneath defender, instead, he throws him open behind him:That puts Thomas in position to ready himself for contact from the safety crashing down:It is a simple play but it speaks to the brilliance of Brees and what he can do for his teammates with timing and anticipation. Play-actionWith Mark Ingram serving one more game of his four-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs, Kamara remains the focal point of the Saints’ rushing attack. While New Orleans has struggled on the ground so far this season, averaging just 3.3 yards per rushing attempt and 82.7 yards per game, placing them 28th in the league in that category, they are still successful on play-action passing plays. That begins with design from Sean Payton, but it is aided along by execution from Brees himself.Against the Falcons the Saints got into the end zone for the first points of the game using a play-action design down near the goal line:The Saints come out with Taysom Hill (7), a third-string quarterback, in the game. This is something New Orleans does often, using Hill in the red zone or for a few packages per game. They align in a 2x2 formation with Ginn (19) in a wing to the right. On this play, Brees fakes a toss to the left before booting back to the right, a standard play-action design. It is Ginn who is the target, who comes down the line of scrimmage on this underneath shallow route, and that is where Brees goes with the football.New Orleans showed the same look later in the first quarter, only this time Brees looked to Hill (89) running the underneath shallow route from the left wing:While these two plays are more standard, textbook boot-action designs they are not the only way New Orleans looks to attack a defense off play-action. In the extra frame against the Falcons, Brees found Thomas on a deeper crossing route that had more of a throwback element to it. Brees came out of a play-action fake again rolling to the right, but then he stopped to throw a deep crossing route to Thomas where he receiver was working right-to-left:On this play Thomas does a very good job on executing his route. Instead of going over the top of the linebacker dropping into zone coverage to handle him, Thomas cuts underneath him, making himself available for Brees. The QB hits Thomas, who cuts upfield and into Falcons’ territory with a big gain. From accuracy and placement, through timing and rhythm, and into play-action schemes, Brees is playing at a high level right now and will be tough to slow up on Sunday. That task falls to the Giants’ defense, and it is indeed a tall test.
